Designed for both the classroom teacher from PK-6 as well as art teachers, this hands-on course correlates specific art materials and art projects with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Social Studies, Science, Math, Language Arts, and Visual Arts at each grade level. Each idea was formulated after carefully reviewing the Frameworks for each subject area and grade level. There are endless ways that art can be used to enhance learning taking place within these subject areas which can benefit not only the visual learner but all children. Expression of one's creativity is of immense importance and is a crucial part of the overall curriculum because we need the creativity of our future adults to blossom and grow. To do that, children and their teachers need to spend time in acts of imagination that are unstructured so that they can tap into that playful side where they can create, invent, and dream. If not, new ideas will find no fertile ground in which to germinate. A $35 materials fee is due at the first class.

Sharpen your observation skills! Learn ways to perceive the natural world as well as man-made objects as part of landscape watercolor painting. You'll come away with the ability to see the world through an artist's eye (your own) that will enrich your life and help you pass on those observation skills to the students you teach. We'll be painting on location, weather permitting, in the Salem, Beverly, or Gloucester area. Each day we will meet at a different site. In the event of inclement weather, class will be held at NCSD Topsfield . A list of art materials and supplies for "plein air" painting will be mailed to you prior to the start of the course. Come experience the joy of painting outdoors with this wonderful medium! Day 1, Meet at NCSD Center, Topsfield.

Combining art and writing is a natural in the classroom and one can be an excellent motivator for the other. In this hands-on course with a dual focus, participants will have the opportunity to create using a wide variety of art materials for 2-D and 3-D work. Their creations will provide an impetus for imaginative/literary writing including stories and poems and for informational/expository writing including directions, summaries, interpretations or explanations, interviews, and accounts based on personal experience. Sometimes the writing will provide the impetus for the artistic expression. All writing and visual art activities will correlate with the Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Frameworks for Composition and the Visual Arts Frameworks. All the ideas can be adapted for the grade levels of the participants.
