This course was fantastic. I enjoyed it so much. I learned very valuable information that I can now share with my students. I thought Paula was a great teacher. She is well-organized and had fun projects. We all learned so much. I would take it again.

Art and Creative Writing--A Natural Combination PK-6
Location: Northeast Consortium for Staff Development, Topsfield
Time: June 25-29, 2012
Contact:  Northeast Consortium for Staff Development, 978-322-2250

This is a three-credit graduate level course provided by the Northeast Consortium for Staff Development in conjunction with Salem State College.

Combining art and writing is a natural in the classroom and one can be an excellent motivator for the other. In this hands-on course with a dual focus, participants will have the opportunity to create using a wide variety of art materials for 2-D and 3-D work. Their creations will provide an impetus for imaginative/literary writing including stories and poems and for informational/expository writing including directions, summaries, interpretations or explanations, interviews, and accounts based on personal experience. Sometimes the writing will provide the impetus for the artistic expression. All writing and visual art activities will correlate with the Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Frameworks for Composition and the Visual Arts Frameworks. All the ideas can be adapted for the grade levels of the participants.

Fostering Innovation and Creativity Through the Science/Visual Arts Connection
Location: Northeast Consortium for Staff Development, Topsfield
Time: August 6-10, 2012

This is a three-credit graduate level course provided by the Northeast Consortium for Staff Development in conjunction with Salem State College.

There is a growing concern among Americans that the US is falling behind in innovation.  Many blame poor math and science education.  Some feel that the government is not doing enough to support technological innovation and that American business is not investing enough in either and that our workers are lacking the skills to make them innovative.

For many schools the emphasis in education in the last decade has been on passing standardized tests, but at what expense to creativity, innovation, and “teachable moments” in the classroom?  We need to grow a new generation of workers who can “think out of the box” in order to stay a leader in innovation in the world.

This course will focus on two important areas that can help teachers of Grades PK-5 foster innovation and creativity in their classrooms by combining some of the skills students learn in Science and the Visual Arts.  Through the use of the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Learning Standards and research on creativity and the visual arts process, participants will gain an awareness of the similarities of learning in the arts and sciences and how using both together can enhance and advance learning and innovation in the classroom.  Utilizing a combination of lecture, discussion, and hands-on activities, participants will explore the Four Strands of the Science & Technology/Engineering Standards and the Visual Arts connections that can foster together more innovative thinking and problem solving.  There is a materials fee of $20 due at the first meeting of the course.
